Aarhus has been a principal harbour since Viking Age about 5-700 A. C. and today Denmark´s main harbour to handle the worlds biggest container ships.

In march 2016 Denmark won the title of Worlds happiest country according to the World Happiness Report Update 2016, worldhappiness.report.
The report is released by Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) for the United Nations, unsdsn.org.
Its Denmarks third title within the last five year. Denmark won the title in 2012 and 2013 – in 2015 Switzerland won the title.

West Street – Vestergade was since 900 A.C. the main road between AROS (Aarhus) and Viborg in central Jutland.
Vestergade began at western rampart (Wall) of The Viking Age military and port settlement AROS since 750 A.C.
In Vestergade there are today many 18th century merchant estates.

The sculptor is 2,35 m high and set up by Aarhus Harbour and “Marineforeningen for Aarhus og omegn” the 4. may 1952.
6000 danish seaman joined the allied english-, canadien-, australien- and United States forces mostly on cargo ships on navigation convoys in North Atlantic Sea between United States, Greenland, Iceland and England.
